Last year, South Africa’s Got Talent winner Johnny Apple released his ‘Tabula Rasa’ EP. The project featured the singles ‘Home Tonight’ and ‘Lights Down Low’. The project saw him step away from the more soulful material of his self-titled debut album and he explored a more youthful approach to pop music. Now, the star continues to explore a mix of pop and dance music as he works on his upcoming project – and the songs sound like his best to date.
Johnny took to his Instagram pages to tease two new tracks he has worked on alongside the December Streets’ Tristan Coetzee and producer Dolf Willemse. The sonic direction is exactly something the star should be releasing – youthful, refreshing, universal and current. Johnny’s secret weapon has always been his incredible vocal ability and it’s great to see him push himself creatively like this on his new material.
The songs, rumoured to be titled ‘Useless’ and ‘You Got Me Like’, are reminiscent of something acts like Louis Tomlinson or The Chainsmokers would release and it seems the star has finally found a place in pop music where he feels comfortable. The songs sound very promising and I’m excited to hear the final versions when they’re released later this year.
