It’s been four years since Katy Perry dropped ‘Prism’ and today, she makes her highly anticipated return with her fifth studio album ‘Witness’. The era has already started on a great note. ‘Chained To The Rhythm’ was a strong lead single which was ultimately followed up by the Migos-assisted ‘Bon Appétit’ and the Nicki Minaj-assisted ‘Swish Swish’. The tracks, however, haven’t had the impact as those of her previous singles and are actually struggling commercially.
Despite this, the star is incredibly excited about her new album. The creation of the 15-track project has been an organic process for the star. “I’m just having a lot of fun and experimenting with different producers, and different collaborators, and different styles,” she said in August last year.
Sonically, Katy takes a darker approach to pop music, despite the bright cover. However, this doesn’t mean it’s a moody album at all. The production is simply edgy and Katy explores a sound that she has identified with over the past few years. However, after first listen, the album doesn’t have the impact I was hoping it would have. Katy fails to connect with her audiences on the record and after inspiring with her ‘purposeful pop’ on ‘Chained To The Rhythm’, the rest of the record is, unfortunately, generic and impersonal.
Funnily enough, the album drops on the very same day Taylor Swift adds her music back to streaming services. Could she be trying to overshadow Katy’s success or was this just coincidental? Katy Perry’s ‘Witness’ is now available in store and on all major digital platforms.
