After what feels like forever, LeAnne Dlamini is back with a brand new album. The R&B songstress dropped her new album ‘Warrior’ via Universal Music recently and the record has already spawned the hits ‘No Sweat’ and ‘Je T’aime’.
R&B is a genre that hasn’t been getting the attention it deserves on the local front. Hip-Hop and afro-pop is a direction most artists have been taking due to the rise in popularity of the sound so it’s refreshing to hear an artist take on the genre. However, ‘Warrior’ isn’t an R&B record in the traditional sense. To appeal to a wider audience, LeAnne has blended hip-hop and afro-pop aspects into her music and managed to find a decent common ground between genres.
Vocally, LeAnne shows off all aspects of her vocal range on the album. R&B requires an artist to use both their lower and upper register often and LeAnne does a great job showcasing her vocal. LeAnne understands the strength and the weakness in her voice and almost always succeeds in ensuring her delivery is on point. Her vocal performance on the record is soothing, smooth and the you can hear the emotion coming through each word.
LeAnne also invited a few guests for the ride on this album. The singer has collaborated with artists such as Marichan, Jonathan Butler and is joined by Gigi Lamayne, Khanyi Mbau and Fifi Cooper on the powerful track ‘Slay’ and each featured artist brings a different element to the album.
Overall, LeAnne did a great job with her new album. Although not a perfect record, the singer delivered a collection of tracks which really represent her essence and does a great job giving the tracks life. The production is great, the lyrical content is strong and sonically, it’s an experience unlike anything you’d hear on the commercial front right now.
