They’ve been rather quiet but The Graeme Watkins Project has spent some time in the studio recently – and they’re finally back with a new single! The band has just dropped ‘Love In Abundance’ and are ready to take on the music scene yet again. I caught up with Graeme as he tells me more about the new single, life as a parent and their decision to release their music on a single-by-single basis.
Welcome back! What did the band get up to during your hiatus?
We got married, had children and did various solo projects which we found to be far to grown-up for our liking. So, we’ve come to our senses and are back to making music together rekindling that which makes us happy.
You’re back with a new single. What inspired ‘Love In Abundance’?
The song is about living life youthfully without the restraints of responsibility which can often be quite a hindrance when it comes to experiencing life. I guess that’s what inspired us to write the song, remembering that you shouldn’t be taking it to seriously.
What do you think it is about the song that makes it stand out?
We like to think we have a very particular sound which we’ve tweaked and adapted to cater for a more current market. We hope to generate new fans as well as satisfying old ones with this song. Our live shows are still our greatest asset but I think sonically we are a very unique sounding band within the context of the South African market.
You recorded an awesome music video for the track. What was the day on set like?
It was incredibly fun shoot but very dirty and very dusty. It left us with sinus issues for about three weeks! I loved every single second of making it and I’m even more proud of the finished product.
You’ve decided to release your music on a single by single basis. What prompted this decision?
I think with the new way in which people consume music it’s tough to concentrate on a full body of work and still keep it current within the timeframe given to you. The first few tracks may fit the current music space but singles after that sound dated by the time they reach radio. We will release a body of work when the opportunity presents itself, though.
The band has all grown up and I am sure band practice is a little different now. What’s the dynamic like within the band now that everyone is either engaged or raising kids?
We have pipes now and read old leather books with fancy hats on. We peer over our glasses, reminisce about days gone by and wonder what it would be like to be young again and then we cackle amongst ourselves. No, I’m just kidding. We rock harder than ever now!
What does the next few months look like for the Graeme Watkins Project?
World domination! Except for Tuesdays and Thursdays. That is when my son has swimming lessons and I have to be at those. Other than that we’ve got some very exciting things planned. Watch this space.
