Review: Alexandra May – One

Alexandra May
One (David Gresham Records)

Breakdown: Alexandra May set the local pop scene alight earlier this year with her debut single ‘Amazing’ and has just started promoting her follow-up single ‘Highlights’. Now, after a long time coming, the singer has released debut five-track EP ‘One’.

How Many Good Tracks: 3 of the 5.

What I Liked: Alexandra is a breath of fresh air. She has an incredible voice which reminds me a lot of Carly Rae Jepsen and shows it off multiple times on this EP. The EP is a great introduction to the singer who takes things back to basics. There is a mix of uptempo bangers and slower mid-tempo tracks which, again, allows Alexandra to show off her talents. Alexandra has put together a great collection of songs and gives listeners a small taste of what she is capable of. There is a lot of potential here.

What I Didn’t Like: Alexandra did a great job with the EP, however, I think the singer played it a little too safe at parts. I would have liked to hear an edgier pop track where she pushes herself outside of her comfort zone. The album also includes two covers and, on a five-track EP, I would have liked to hear more original material from the singer. Despite this, Alexandra proves she’s a force to be reckoned with.

Best Track: First

Rating: 3/5
