Charlie Puth Urges Self-Compassion on New Single ‘Beat Yourself Up’

Charlie Puth is entering his most vulnerable era yet. The multi-platinum, award-winning artist today unveiled “Beat Yourself Up,” the latest release from his forthcoming studio album Whatever’s Clever!, due out March 27. Co-produced by Puth alongside longtime collaborator BLOODPOP, the track strips things back emotionally, offering a candid reminder to ease up on ourselves — even when we feel like we’ve fallen short.

“‘Beat Yourself Up’ started as something I wanted to tell a friend,” Puth shares. “We’ve never been the heart-to-heart types, so I wrote it in a song instead.” What began as a message of reassurance soon became something more personal. “While writing it, I soon realised this wasn’t just for my friend but myself and so many others who can be hard on themselves.”

Built on introspective lyrics and understated production, the song leans into themes of self-forgiveness, resilience and growth — signalling a creative shift toward deeper storytelling. It’s a sound that positions Whatever’s Clever! as Puth’s most reflective and explorative project to date.

The single arrives alongside an official music video directed by Hunter Moreno, visually capturing the song’s emotional weight while keeping the focus firmly on its message: keep going, be kinder to yourself, and remember you’re not alone. “It’s a message to keep going and be kinder to yourself,” Puth adds. “That things will get better.”

The release also follows news of Puth’s biggest world tour yet, with the singer set to fill arenas across the globe later this year, a clear sign that even as he turns inward creatively, his reach continues to expand.
