Choccy Chox On His Musical Background, His Journey With GOODLUCK & His New Single ‘Fire’

South African hitmaker Choccy Chox has released a brand-new new solo single titled ‘Fire’ as he cements himself as a solo artist making major waves.Having formerly performed under the name Matthew O’Connell, he’s best known for his work with multi-award winning GoodLuck as well as his own string of releases. Now, the musician opens up about the new single, his time with the popular electronic group and some background on his love for music growing up.

What was the inspiration behind your new track ‘Fire’?

I wrote this song based on the insecurities that we are challenged with when we are attracted to someone or find someone interesting. Too often we find ourselves judging people by the way they look and how they carry themselves.

Who did you work with on the track?

I wrote and produced this record. To take it a step further I ended up mastering the original version of ‘Fire’ along with co-directing the music Video with Sam World from No Method. We’ve just released a remix of the track as well which I am really excited about.

Tell us more about your musical journey so far.

I grew up in a musical family. My Dad played keyboards in a band named “Airborne” which was a very popular smooth jazz band. After my studies, I joined the band GoodLuck as the third member playing the Saxophone, Keyboards and Vocals. Off the back of eleven #1 radio hits in South Africa, we toured around Europe, Asia, Africa and the UK, across many global stages. After five years of travelling the world, headlining countless shows and festivals I decided to part ways and focus all my attention on my solo career as a Singer, Songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.

Prior to joining GoodLuck, I released a few singles that went on to topping the SA charts called “ Take It Slow” and “Skylight”. While with the band GoodLuck I was part of making numerous hits locally and internationally, releasing their first global breakout hit single called “Back In The Day” and “Thinking About You”.

Did you always want a career in music?

I always knew music would be a part of me in some way. However, if you had asked me this question while I was at school… travelling to 14 different countries in one year, headlining shows all around the world playing music, that would’ve only been a dream, which I am living right now.

What can we expect from you in the future? Any more planned releases?

Currently I feel like I am in the best space of my life right now. I have three finished singles lined up that are ready to go and looking at doing a few local and international collaborations so definitely everyone one can expect a lot more music coming out.
