So many of us are still coming to terms with Chester Bennington’s death. Not only did the rocker speak to the souls of millions through music, his depression is something so many of us can relate to. In a way, his death highlighted the fact that we need to be more open about depression and everything around it.
Naturally, Chester’s death hit the rest of his Linkin Park bandmates like a ton of bricks. “The shockwaves of grief and denial are still sweeping through our family as we come to grips with what has happened,” the band said in a statement on their Facebook page. “Your absence leaves a void that can never be filled—a boisterous, funny, ambitious, creative, kind, generous voice in the room is missing. We’re trying to remind ourselves that the demons who took you away from us were always part of the deal. After all, it was the way you sang about those demons that made everyone fall in love with you in the first place. You fearlessly put them on display, and in doing so, brought us together and taught us to be more human. You had the biggest heart, and managed to wear it on your sleeve.”
The morning of Chester’s death, however, the group released the music video to their new single ‘Talking To Myself’. The video is a personal look at the band’s relationship with each other and their fans. Featuring some behind the scene clips from their recent European tour. Chester features throughout the film and is, funnily enough, an ode to the star’s on-stage persona.
The song was written by Chester from his wife Talinda Bentley’s point of view as she watched him battle his personal demons. “I admit I made mistakes/ But yours might cost you everything/ Can’t you hear me calling you home?” he sings on the track. ‘Talking To Myself’ is another example of the star using music as a form of therapy. The song is another fantastic pop track from the band who deviated away from their signature rock sound on their latest album ‘One More Light’. However, despite the change in sonic direction, the group continue to deliver beautifully-written songs which speak to the masses. ‘Talking To Myself’ is another reminder of how important Linkin Park is to so many people. RIP, Chester. You will be missed.
