Unwrapping Episode 1 of Netflix’s new docuseries ‘(Un)Well’

*WARNING* Spoilers ahead!

I studied Aromatherapy when I was in college and fell in love with all the smells and benefits that the wellness industry, in general, has to offer us. Netflix has recently come out with a new Docuseries called (Un)Well. This series is well debated when it comes to our wellness industry

The series consists of six episodes. Each episode targets a different section of the wellness industry. You will learn about Essential oils, Tantric Sex, Bulking up with breast milk, Fasting, Ayahuasca and Bee Sting Therapy.

The Wellness industry is worth trillions of dollars! This is a fact that not many people are aware of. This series will either make you extremely sceptical about the industry or it will open your eyes to treatments that you did not even know existed.

The first episode takes a look at the world of Essential oils. Essential oils, when used correctly, can have great benefits on your body. During the episode, we are shown how essential oils are being used in hospitals to help combat certain conditions such as anxiety and even pain.

We are also shown that people seek out help for their children and loved ones. They find therapeutic practitioners to help their loved ones deal with chronic conditions. Then the episode gets interesting…

Netflix interviews professionals who have trained in essential oils and have been working in the industry for decades! We hear from Dr Eric Zielinski and his wife Sabrina. He is a chiropractor who has made a fortune selling tutorials on essential oils online. They do not sell the oils directly but their videos have gotten millions of views! He claims that essential oils cured him of various ailments and that he feels called to extol their virtues by God him/herself.

In another segment of the series, we hear from Donald Gary Young, the founder of Young Essentials. This is a multi-level marketing company. His annual meetings filled football stadiums! Like most MLM, most of the people who buy into it, lose money and do not sell anything. This company has made its way to South Africa and a lot of people are selling the products from home without knowing how to guide you correctly. DoTERRA Essential Oils also make an appearance in the first episode.

We also hear from a user of one of these MLM companies’ oils who got such a severe rash from the overcompensation that she had to be hospitalized.

My thoughts:

I am glad that Netflix took the time to shine a light on my industry. The wellness industry can have great benefits to the people who take the time to come for treatments as we use techniques that have been around for centuries.

The only downfall is that people are using my industry and turning it into a multi-level marketing scheme. Some of the people who sell the oils are not trained and do not give you the correct advice. I would strongly suggest that if you do want to start to use essential oils to help you, you seek professional advice. Go to an aromatherapist who has studied in the industry and can ensure that you use the oils safely and correctly.

I also found that the producers were more interested in the people who are making easy money out of the industry and did not focus too much on the people who use the industry and treatments reasonably and effectively.

End of the day, the (Un)Well will show you therapies that can help your body heal holistically and naturally. It is definitely worth watching.
