Review: Lira – Born Free

Lira Born Free

Lira
Born Free (Otarel Music)

Breakdown: She has a voice of gold and won over many new fans as a coach on The Voice South Africa and local songstress Lira dropped her brand new album ‘Born Free’ recently. The record was preceded by the beautiful lead singles ‘Let There Be Light’ and ‘Be About It’.

How Many Good Tracks: 15 of the 16.

What I Liked: Lira is one of the most incredible musicians to come out of South Africa – and ‘Born Free’ reiterates this. Lira, firstly, is so true to herself within her music and doesn’t try to emulate anyone. Lira is incredibly proud of her heritage and this shines through with the prominent African influences throughout the album. The one thing that really stuck out for me was the way Lira writes her songs. This collection is more like poetry with music than songs in the traditional sense. Speaking of the music, each and every song was put together wonderfully and each instrument is there for a reason. The tone of the album is all about empowerment and freedom – something that will inspire the youth of today. This is a powerful album from Lira.

What I Didn’t Like: Lira does a lot of experimentation on this album. This isn’t a bad thing, but it does, at times, get a bit confusing.

Best Track: Be About It

Rating: 5/5
