Adam Lambert
The Original High (Warner Music)
Breakdown: I’ve always been a fan of Adam Lambert and he blew me away when he performed in Jozi back in 2012. Since then, he has changed record labels and he been touring the world with Queen. He has just released his third studio album ‘The Original High’ which was preceded by the lead single ‘Ghost Town’. The track went on to become the biggest song in Africa on Shazam’s chart – a huge feat.
How Many Good Tracks: 8 of the 11.
What I Liked: Adam Lambert has been a busy boy and I think that Warner Music finally allowed him to release an album he really wanted out there. He seems so comfortable on this record and was quite involved in the songwriting process. The first thing you notice on any Adam Lambert song is just how strong his vocals are. Coming from a reality TV background, there is no question he can sing – and well. His vocals shine on this album and, for me, he is one of the greatest vocalists of our generation. Secondly, the album’s production is on point. I knew this was going to be a brilliantly produced record from the second I heard ‘Ghost Town’. There are tons of hits on this album which also proves Adam is thinking of the business aspect of making music just as much as he is about his artistic freedom. I think this is the album Adam and his fans wanted and needed.
What I Didn’t Like: While Adam’s voice is brilliant, he needs to understand that he has such a distinct voice and that it may not fit every song. A perfect example about this is the Tove Lo-assisted single ‘Rumors’. The bridge is heavily R&B influenced and would fit an artist such as Justin Timberlake who can hit the highs and lows effortlessly. Other than that, I would have liked to see Adam take a few more risks on this album. Many of the tracks seem to follow a recipe and while they’re great songs, it becomes a bit too predictable by the end of the record.
