His smash debut single ‘Keep Calm’ has been dominating the airwaves all over the country and is proof that 17-year-old Storm is destined for great things. He is working hard on his debut album and has recently released his follow-up single ‘Get Ready’. I sat down with the singer and spoke about the success of his debut single, his campaigns and what the future holds.
Where did your love of music begin?
I’ve always been surrounded by music. At the age of 3 I was hanging around in the company of my cousin and Dale from Prime Circle. They use to jam a lot and I’d be there jamming with them. Music took a back seat in primary school and I focused on sports and academics and then when I got to high school, music was piercing the barriers.
You’ve been involved in a few projects before you launched your debut single. Tell us more about that.
At the age of 15, I started a foundation called the Storm in Africa foundation which raises awareness about communities impacted by violence. I then was involved in a music festival which saw me perform on the same stage as Blackbyrd, Locnville, Vin Deysel, Euphonik, Mean Mr Mustard and more. Last year I teamed up with a few other musicians where we recorded a song called Say No to Xenophobia. Shortly after that I started working on Keep Calm.
Keep Calm has a groovy, funk beat. Why go in this direction and not the typical pop sound young artists are going for these days?
Well, it’s not too far off from the pop sound. It does have elements from the 80’s mixed with a bit of deep house which is really cool and also attracts the youth as well as the older generation.
Keep Calm has become a huge radio hit. How has life changed since the song took off?
It’s actually crazy. I feel like I’m dreaming and I need someone to pinch me. Life has become very busy but I am loving every second of it. I wouldn’t want it any other way.
The video looked super fun to shoot. Tell us more about the day on set.
It was absolutely amazing. There was such an awesome vibe. Everyone was having a good time singing and dancing and I really enjoyed the atmosphere. I think all in all everyone had a great time, but there was a lot of hard that went into shooting it. It was awesome working with an amazing cast and pretty models. We had a large amount of support which made shooting the music video so much easier.
What does the future hold for Storm?
‘Get Ready’ is playing on the airwaves at the moment. I am also off to Nashville to compete in the Super Xtars finale later this year and I’m working with some exciting DJs on new music!
