They gave us hits like ‘Love You Better’, ‘Zoma’ and ‘What You Do To Me’ but local house duo Crazy White Boy have been under the radar for the past few months. However, they have teamed up with Julia Church and have officially made their comeback as their new single ‘Something New’ has taken local radio by storm. Now, the folks are in studio working on their next few releases. I chat to them on the success of their new single, why they’re not looking at releasing an album and who joins them on their next single.
Welcome back! What did you guys get up to during your break?
Break? We can hardly call it that. We were working on some solo records and more underground stuff. We had a few cool works on some major labels overseas and then we decided it was time to release something for radio under Crazy White Boy again.
Tell us about your new single ‘Something New’.
It was a long time coming. When we make a record it can take months or even up to a year to get it to sound the way we want it to. We were lucky enough to have the incredible voice of Julia Church so it made it a little easier for us.
What was it like working with Julia Church on the track?
Julia is fantastic to work with. It’s not often that a vocalist can hear a record and just nail it from the first kick drum. She is an amazing writing talent and has the voice of an angel.
Something New is a new direction for you but still has the CWB sound we know and love. What makes this song stand out from the crowd?
That’s the thing with Crazy White Boy – we like to make records that push the boundary when it comes to radio. The way we do it is make something that we feel will almost be rejected from the playlisters – if it gets rejected more than once then we know we have a record that our fans will appreciate and ultimately stand out.
Is there a new album on the way?
At this point we aren’t looking at albums. We find that it is just as effective to make singles. You can really spend more time on making 2 massive singles a year than trying to finish 10 plus or more to fit an album. Quality is going to be everything now – especially with the new quotas.
The local music scene is blowing up at the moment. Who would you love to work on a track with?
As much as we admire other artists, especially from South Africa, having both of us in studio together is already a crowd. We are very stubborn when it comes to our methods so we do prefer to work together. If it had to be someone it would be an artist that in some way has worked their way into our live show in form of a borrowed loop or record. Someone like DJ Clock or Heavy K.
Give us a little taste of what we can expect on your next single.
Well we actually can let you know that our next single features Ruegroove. Yes, he is back – you might remember him from our first records.
What do the next few months hold for Crazy White Boy?
We will be spending a lot of time in studio and being selective with which shows we take. We just hope to have some nice records for summer!
