She’s here! Miley Cyrus is ready to bring in a new musical era – and she’s making the world sit up and listen as she drops the project’s lead single ‘Midnight Sky’. Produced by Watt and Louis Bell, Miley says that the song is semi-autobiographical and details her life post-divorce.
Coincidentally, the song arrives as Miley confirms that she split with boyfriend of ten months Cody Simpson.
In an interview with Zane Lowe, Miley says that “Talking about ‘Midnight Sky, specifically, I felt like my story and my narrative had kind of been told for me over the past year. Obviously, I went through an extremely public breakup and, even more than that, a divorce, and with someone that I had been with for ten years.” She adds ‘That narrative and that experience of ten years was told for me by one day from the eyes of a helicopter.”
Miley adds that being so raw and honest in her music is something her fans have come to expect from her. “I’ve always spoken directly to my audience, and I felt like I kind of had lost that connection to my fans, that they were kind of in the dark, especially with the idea that there was supposed to be these three EPs, and I only dropped one,” she says. “But I went through … Again, talking about growing pains, I really had to deal with kind of the loss of my home in Malibu. I had to deal with the loss of a love in my life. I had to kind of be human and experience and grow, but then I wanted to tell it directly from my mouth and not from the idea of the public perception, because my story throughout my career has been told through the public perception a lot. I think I just want to regain that power. I think a lot of women are doing that now.”
The song arrives with a trippy 80s-inspired music video. She tells Zane that she wrote and directed and conceptualized the video for ‘Midnight Sky’. In the video, Miley shows off her bleached hair, performs with an array of disco balls and even lays naked in a colourful pool of balls.
As the song gains momentum, Sony Music Africa is also offering local fans to get their hands on a Starmaster night LED projector. To win, fans should take a photograph or video using the single as the soundtrack and share it on social media using #MidnightSky.
