Julanie J is fast making a name for herself as one of the freshest new faces on the local music scene. Her debut album ‘MOOI’ showcased the singer’s breezy approach to Afrikaans music and her new material showcases just how much she has grown as an artist. Her previous single ‘Arm’ became a radio hit and now, the singer is back with a new single titled ‘Bitter’.
Julanie explains that she wrote the lyrics for the track after an evening out the star had with her friends. “One night, my girlfriends and I had a bottle of expensive champagne and to our dismay, it was not as tasty as we expected it to be,” Julanie tells us. “We joked at the time that we should have rather picked one of the cheaper options. From there, the lyrics ‘Die duur bottels proe bitter vir my’ were born.”
While the song literally refers to the story about the champagne, Julanie explains that the song is also a metaphor about the effect the pressures of social media has young women.”At the end of the day, I think that as young women, we are mostly seeking self-confidence and discernment,” the singer adds. “And of course, life is way too short for bad tasting champagne!”
