Local popstar Josh Wantie burst onto the scene last year when he released his debut single ‘Go Under’. Since then, the star dropped his debut EP ‘Paper Crowns’ and collaborated with The Kiffness and SA5H. Now, after months in studio, Josh is ready to show off what he has been working on. The star has just released his brand new single ‘Romeo’ and it’s unlike anything we’ve heard from the star before.
‘Romeo’ sees Josh stray from the pop sound we’ve become accustomed to and enters a more electronic space. The song is an important one for the star because not only did he write the song, but it’s also the first time he produced and mixed a song himself. Josh takes a massive risk with this single. In fact, he throws all the rules out the window. The song has an interesting mix of sounds. There is a dirty bassline, some dark vocal effects and an eastern-inspired flute scales. However, the risk comes in the form of the song’s messy composition. Josh created a song that he loved – despite the direction mainstream dance music takes. Sure, it may be a little too unconventional for radio, but it’s edgy and creative and that’s what makes the song special.
Josh has also been working on his songwriting skills. “Romeo is a narrative about a love triangle written from the point of view of the ‘nice guy.’ He has finally plucked up the courage to tell the girl he loves what he really thinks of the guy she is in love with,” Josh explains. The song is catchy and bold and shows an incredible amount of growth in the artist. The electronic sound looks great on Josh and we’re excited to hear what else he has in store on his upcoming album.
