Charlize Berg Reinvents ‘Hoeka Toeka’

Afrikaans film ‘Vir die Voëls’ is one of the must-watch local films this festive season. The film is based on the life story of Irma Humpel, a tomboy that finds herself in a wedding dress in front of the pulpit with the boy that teased her when they were children. She believed that independence was the only form of freedom until Sampie de Klerk caused her to rethink her convictions. It is a nostalgic film about a willful woman ahead of her time and a man with a strong character that believes a woman should be respected but that you can still fight for her love. The film also has an epic soundtrack and an interesting remix of Carike Keuzenkamp’s smash hit single ‘Hoeka Toeka’ by Charlize Berg.

Charlize worked with producers Hugo Ludik and Vaughan Gardiner on an updated version of the song which is expected to slay the local airwaves over the next few months. The producers gave the song a 2016 make-over while still staying true to the essence which made the original version so popular.

Vaughan explains that they “did not want to destroy this legendary song and that it was quite a challenge to transform the song into something new that people would still want to listen to.” They still wanted to keep it recognisable, maintaining the structure but also creating a fresh pop sound. Hugo adds that “Pop music differs from that of a few years ago. In the original version the choir part was repeated more often and the song was more simplistic. Today people want to hear something new within the first ten seconds of listening to a song.”

The song will be released soon but you can listen to a short preview of the song here:
