After weeks of teasing new music, pop sensation Taylor Swift is back with a bang! The star dropped ‘ME!’ – the highly-anticipated lead single off her upcoming seventh studio album and the colourful pop song features Panic! At The Disco’s lead vocalist Brendon Urie.
The colourful approach is a direct contrast of the star’s previous album ‘reputation’ which was her darkest project yet. However, after getting all her angst out on the album, it seems Taylor is back to her happy-go-lucky approach to pop music.
“‘ME!’ is a song about embracing your individuality and really celebrating it and owning it,” Taylor says. “With a pop song, we have an ability to get a melody stuck in people’s heads and I just want it to be one that makes them feel better about themselves.”
Taylor and Brendan also premiered the eclectic music video for the track which starts with a snake, the animal used throughout Taylor’s reputation era, exploding into a beautiful kaleidoscope of butterflies signifying the start of a new era. In the video, the stars walk through a variety of colourful landscapes as they candidly sing their love song – which is all about celebrating yourself and the ones around you. At one point, Brendon channels Mary Poppins as he jumps off a roof and floats while holding an umbrella.
The star has significantly incorporated a variety of Easter Eggs into her music – and this is certainly the case in this era as well. The entire build-up to the single release was jam-packed with secret clues she left for her fans to uncover. “I cannot believe how dedicated they are, how thoughtful, I can’t believe how much they care,” Taylor says. “You have no idea how fun it is to make stuff for people who care about it that much.”
The star’s latest Easter Egg happened just yesterday when she arrived to take some photos at a mural in Nashville painted by artist Kelsey Montague. There, she revealed the title of her new single. The mural has been painted for weeks and fans began speculating that it is somehow Taylor Swift related and yesterday, she confirmed the entire thing by posing with a newly-spray-painted ‘ME!’ above her head. “You guys are amazing for figuring this out because no one knew we were coming. No one knew this was a part of the campaign and what we’re doing, so you figured out the clue,” she said. “You’re the best. I love you so much.”
‘ME!’ is now available on all digital music platforms.
