Local indie pop group Grassy Spark had an incredibly successful run launching their debut album ‘Portal’. The album cemented the group as one of the most progressive and unique acts in South Africa right now and spawned the hit singles ‘Living In a Paradise (feat Jeremy Loops)’, ‘Here I am’, ‘Feel It’ and ‘Love to Share’. Now, the group are closing off the era as they release ‘Pyromaniac’ – the last single off the project.
Like the group’s previous singles, ‘Pyromaniac’ is a high-energy track with a variety of genres and elements blended together to create something truly magical. The track is one of the group’s favourites and although it may be a bit of an overwhelming track for radio, the group is excited to end off the ‘Portal’ era with a bang. “It’s been a wild ride. We are so humbled by the response and growth of our family. Seeing fans posting videos of themselves jolling to tunes and singing the lyrics at full volume at shows has made us feel like it’s all worth it. It’s this energetic response that has propelled us forward,” comments frontman, Yanick Bathfield.“Pyromaniac is one of our favourites off the album. It’s supposed to feel like a rollercoaster ride through the feelings of obsession. We play this song near the end of the set when the fire is at its most lit. It’s a blast from the rock ‘n roll past and has no chill. It’s a great way to burn your way through the Portal.”
However, the end of an era hints to the start of a new one and while the group remain tight-lipped on their upcoming releases, they have confirmed that we’ll be getting new music in 2018. “It’s been about 3 years since the writing of Portal began, so we’ve had plenty of time to write a new chapter to the story. We created a portal into a world of the ‘bright, beautiful, timeless and unexpected’ and it’s this world that we will be exploring with you going forward.”
