The biggest weekend in South African music takes place this weekend as the industry celebrates the very best music released over the past year. The glamorous awards returned to Sun City this year and saw Somizi and Tumi Morake play hosts.
The gospel genre thrived during the first night of awards. Khaya Mthethwa took home two awards for his new album ‘The Dawn’ which won in the Best Contemporary Faith Music Album and Best Live Audio Visual Recording categories. Meanwhile Kwesta and Amanda Black picked up one award each and emerge as frontrunners ahead of the live event this evening.
However, this year, it was Kwesta’s time to shine. Kwesta started his winning streak last night when he won the Best Collaboration Award alongside Samro Highest Airplay of the Year, SAMPRA Highest Airplay of the Year, Best Rap Album, Best Male Artist of the Year and Best Album of the Year for his Dakar II album and hit single Ngud. His trophy haul stands at six in one year.
