Review: Nasty C – Bad Hair Extensions

Nasty C is easily one of the most exciting new acts on the South African hip-hop scene. He released his debut album ‘Bad Hair’ last year and shortly after, dropped the official deluxe edition of the album titled ‘Bad Hair Extensions’. The album spawned hits such as ‘Allow’, ‘Pressure’ and ‘Hell Naw’ – which became one of the biggest tracks of 2016.

The rapper delivered a promising debut album which will, undoubtedly, put him on the map going forward. Nasty C is a fantastic rapper. He has written some incredible material on the 19-track album and delivers them effortlessly. A good rap song, however, relies a lot on the production of the record – and Nasty C teamed up with some producers who brought his music to life. Many of the tracks have a cross-over appeal which has helped Nasty C boost his career. Tracks like ‘Hell Naw’ charted on urban and Top 40 stations around the country and proved that the rapper has that X Factor.

Collaborations are massive in hip-hop – especially in South Africa and on this record, Nasty C teamed up with some of the best. Joining him on the album is American rapper French Montana alongside local names such as Cassper Nyovest, Telleman, Slikour, Erick Rush and many more, each bringing their own flavour to the record.

Although this is a very strong debut release, I would like to see the rapper find his identity and sound going forward and create a brand instead of simply releasing hip-hop. The rapper uses a similar recipe for every track on the album which makes the record monotonous at times. That being said, this is a debut album and artists are known to still be finding their feet on their first release and, ultimately, Nasty C delivered a great record.
