Thousands of South Africans fell in love with Gavin Edwards during his time on The Voice South Africa. After he was crowned the runner-up of the show’s inaugural season, the singer dropped his debut single ‘Sparks’ under his new partnership with Universal Music South Africa. The song became a massive hit around the country and Gavin reminded the local audience that he means business. Today, Gavin Edwards drops his debut album ‘Silver Skies’ so I got up close and personal with the star as he opens up on the project.
“‘Silver Skies’ is everything I’ve ever wanted my album to sound like and exactly the vibe I’ve always heard myself having,” Gavin reveals. “It’s an upbeat album with some Justin Timberlake funk bbut there are also some serious piano ballads and acoustic tracks as well. I wanted to make a current sounding album and have a whole lot of songs that radio would love as well.”
Gavin went straight into the studio shortly after the show ended to ensure he could release his debut album before Christmas which put a lot of pressure on him as an artist. “We recorded the album in a short amount of time in between all my gigs and we had to pull a few all-nighters. However, I got to sing from my heart so most takes on the album were done on the first or second take. This added so much to the album as you can hear how raw and real the vocals sound.”
The singer joined forces with Just Jinger’s Denholm Harding on the album who is a long-time friend of the star. The familiarity the two had with each other shone through the music and made the recording experience a pleasant one. As his debut single suggests, Gavin went into the production process with the intent of writing hits. “I reckon you’ve got to have the intention of writing that next big single when you’re in the studio. It’s important to remember that there is a certain sound the public and radio stations like – and you’ve got to satisfy them.”
Over the past year, life has completely turned around for Gavin. The star admitted during his time on the show that he was addicted to alcohol and that he is finally sober. He then signed with one of the world’s biggest record labels, welcomed a baby boy into the world and today, drops his debut album ‘Silver Skies’. When asked where the album’s title comes from, Gavin admits that “This year has been about shooting for the stars and I want to take this album as high as possible”.
It’s clear that Gavin is extremely proud of the hard work that has gone into making this album and today, his dreams become a reality. ‘Silver Skies’ is now available at your nearest music store or on your favourite digital platform. Support local music and get your copy today.
