LISTEN: Mthandazo Gatya Drops His Powerful Debut Album ‘New Age Healer’

Senzeni hitmaker Mthandazo Gatya, affirmed himself as a spiritually inclined musician when he released his debut EP titled ‘Umonde’ at the top of the year. He spawned hits including the lead single ‘Senzeni’, ‘Hallelujah’ and ‘Abafana’ from the EP. Through the success of the body of work and receiving recognition for his spiritually inclined musical sensibility.

Mthandazo was dubbed as the New Age Healer, a notion he leaned into with the release of his debut full-length studio album aptly named New Age Healer. The album is touted as one which is meant to “spread messages of love, hope, and spirituality” – a fact which he reiterated during the promotional journey of the album when he wrote on the album that the intention is to, “target the hearts, minds and souls of the people in the country, and may they receive healing.”

On the record, Mthandazo continues to blend Afropop, R&B, Maskandi and soul as he did on his ‘Umonde’ EP. With organic instrumentation and afro-house rhythms anchoring the project, his lush vocals spread messages of love, hope, perseverance, and spirituality. Over 12 tracks, the singer-songwriter injects uplifting messages with the palpable presence of his musical idol Jabu Khanyile at the fore.

The album includes the lead single, ‘Uzobizwa’ and the current radio charting single ‘Jikelele’ which features Mvzzle and sees Mthandazo assert his niche of blending afro-elements leaning on Maskandi with contemporary sonics of house and pop.
