Local pop star TATUM is back with new music this week – and this time, she sings about an old high school fling and what life would have been like if they both made different choices. In true TATUM style, the star also premiered a vibrant video for the track and takes fans all the way back to their high school dance.
The singer wonders what could have been on this melancholic yet nostalgic song. With some groovy guitar licks, 80’s inspired style bass and synth, rolling kicks, sweet vocal harmonies and a slick production from producer Paul Gala, the track is another reminder of just how talented and creative the singer is.
“‘Homecoming’ is about that sweet high school love. The one you’ll never forget. Looking back at it, you had a taste of what your life could have been with that person and how happy you were at the time,” TATUM tells us. “Life changes so fast and you always wonder about that road not taken – and how past choices affect everything in your present life.”
To give the track an extra umph, TATUM takes fans back to high school with a beautifully nostalgic video for the track. The music video sees TATUM teaming up with creative visionary, Matthew Levings, who comments “TATUM’s ‘Homecoming’ feels like a departure from the melancholic themes that she explored in ‘Fever’. However, there is still a dark undercurrent that she explores in this story. One of a violent and destructive domestic dream, with flashes of a love left unresolved. The disco / pop sound echoes the visuals of the dance hall, with the gravity of the lyrics keeping her sinister themes alive – like dancing through destruction.”
TATUM adds “Making this video was so fun. The characters in the video are all friends and even some family which makes it very special to me, especially the scene where I’m playing piano to my aunt and her mom who taught me all I know now about singing and vocal techniques. Their love for music inspired me and so having them there meant a lot to me.”
