It’s Official! Disney+ Is Coming To South Africa In 2022

Disney fans across the country have been waiting with baited breath for the popular streaming service Disney+ to launch in South Africa. Local Disney representatives have remained mum on a South African launch date since the streaming service launched in the United States but now, Disney+ finally has a release date in the territory – Winter 2022.

Disney+ first launched back in November 2019 and has since become available in 36 countries around the world. The service has become the third most popular streaming service after Netflix and Amazon Prime.

In a Q3 2021 earnings call on Thursday (12 August), Disney revealed that South Africa will be included in the next country rollout which will take place in ‘summer 2022’ (northern hemisphere).

Walt Disney CEO Bob Chapek confirmed that further information, including pricing, will be confirmed closer to launch. “As confirmed in The Walt Disney Company’s Q3 Earnings Call, Disney+ will launch in South Africa in winter 2022. We will share more details as we approach the launch next year,” the spokesperson said.

The South African launch will coincide with new territories launching in Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

Since launch, Disney has amassed a subscriber base of 116 million who have flocked to watch the brand’s classic movies as well as a string of original Marvel content including ‘The Mandalorian’, ‘Loki’, ‘Falcon & The Winter Soldier’, ‘Wandavision’ and the upcoming ‘Marvel’s What If…’.
