2020 saw you release a string of hit singles. How do you keep the creative spark alive?
I keep the creative spark alive by being consistent with what I create. It’s not quantity for me, it’s quality and it’s been something that I continue to live my life by.
You worked with Shaggy on ‘We Got Us’. Why do you think so many people connected to that song?
One of the key elements to good song writing is how relatable the lyrics are or, as I would say, the ‘conversation’ is. It also helps to have a catchy melody and I think this song checked all the boxes which is why it was so well-received.
What was the biggest lesson you learned during the creative process here.
The biggest lesson I learned is team work makes the dream work. So many people came together on this track and the result is something I am really proud of.
You’re no stranger to collaborations. How does working with another artist push you out of your creative safe zone?
I love being taken out of my element by another artist while working together but, to do so, one has to put aside ego. It only gets in the way of the creation.
Speaking of collaborations, you’ve just released your new single ‘Party Like It’s Your Birthday’ with Studio Killers. What was it like working with them?
Actually working with Studio Killers was a prime example of being taken out of my element and, as you can see, the end product speaks for itself.
What is the best part about making music, for you?
The best part about making music is seeing the reaction of my fans and supporters upon hearing the tracks. Seeing how my music affects people is something I will never tire of.
Is there a message you’d like to tell your fans in South Africa?
To all my fans in South Africa, I want to thank you for supporting my music over the years and I hope we get to meet soon. Be well and stay safe!
You’ve got a very busy year ahead! Can you give us a glimpse into what we can expect from you this year?
The journey continues. It’s all about the music…
