Kelly Khumalo’s highly-anticipated new reality series ‘Life With Kelly Khumalo’ has been welcomed with open arms. The first six episodes of the 13-part series premiered on Showmax last week and the response from viewers has been exceptional – proving yet again that original content is king.
In the show, Kelly gives fans a glimpse into her chaotic life from her music career, raising two children as a single mother to being a badass businesswoman.
Now, as viewers wait patiently for the second batch of episodes to premiere on 27 August, Kelly opens up about her reality series experience and the power of partnering up with streaming platform Showmax to tell her story.
We’re obsessed with ‘Life With Kelly Khumalo’. What attracted you to create a series like this?
There’s nothing more powerful than telling your own story through your own voice and owning every aspect of your journey. With a series like this, I am able to share my story in a more intimate way than ever before and it’s something I am really excited about.
Why do you think so many people seem to relate to reality television – especially in the days of The Kardashians and Real Housewives, 90 Day Fiancé, The Bachelor, Idols and more?
People relate to what feels like home to them and I think that’s the case with reality shows. I hope that, through this show, people realise that while I am a public figure, I am human just like everyone else. The response to that has been overwhelming and I am thrilled people are enjoying the series.
How do you decide on what to share with your audience and what to keep private?
To make a series like this work, I made the decision not to decide. Instead, I just live my life. The point of the show is to give viewers an inside look into my life and that was my goal through the entire process.
What makes this series different to the many other reality shows on TV today?
It’s a Kelly Khumalo reality show and there can only be one Kelly Khumalo! That’s what makes this different. No one else shares the same story as I do.
Partnering with Showmax is exciting because the way people consume media has changed drastically over the past few years. Talk to us a bit about your thoughts of having six and seven episodes of the show dropping at the same time and releasing material on a streaming service.
Platforms like Showmax are the best in this day and age where everything is digitally driven. Their primary goal is to give people what they want when they want it. What could be better than that? I am so happy my vision came to life on a platform like this one.
