Tiwa Savage Confirms Roc Nation Deal

Rumours of Tiwa Savage’s signing to Jay Z’s Roc Nation label have been around for a few weeks now but it wasn’t until recently that both the Nigerian artist and the label confirmed that she had, indeed, joined one of the Roc Nation family. “Welcome Tiwa Savage to the Roc Nation family,” the label said on their website while Tiwa took to her social media accounts to post a picture of herself signing the contract.

“It feels like home. I’m really really excited. A huge thank you to my Mavin family, Don Jazzy for making this dream come true. Thanks to the fans”, the singer said in a video shortly after breaking the news.

Tiwa has also confirmed that although signing to one of the greatest labels in the world, she has no plans on changing what has made her so popular in the first place. “They really just want to bring what I already have to offer to the rest of the world, and they truly believe in the movement. So yeah, I’m really excited about it,” she said in an interview.

Despite this, she revealed that African music has, indeed, been influenced by the music coming out in America. “When we speak of Africa, we have to always remember that it is a continent. And so you have South Africa, East Africa, West Africa, North Africa, and it’s just a huge continent with different cultures, and different languages,” she said. “We are all influenced by the music coming out of America. We are influenced by Hip-Hop. We are influenced by Soul Music, R&B, and I think that is the beauty of it, blending both markets together. So when you say African-American, that’s where it should be, between the African and the American world, just blending both together.”

The singer also revealed why she decided to keep mum on the new deal until now. “The reason why we did not really make too much noise about it is because a lot of people come over from Africa and they say they’ve got this deal and that deal, and then nothing happens. We just wanted to do it the proper way, get it official,” she admits. “I didn’t want to do that to my people. I wanted them to really believe that it was really happening, so we wanted to wait for the right time, and the time is now.”

The deal reportedly took close to a year to finalize but both Roc Nation and Tiwa Savage are excited about what the future has to hold. We are so proud of Tiwa and we can’t wait to hear her new music!
