Review: Will Young – 85% Proof

Will Young
85% Proof (Universal Music)

Breakdown: 85% Proof is the sixth studio album from British singer Will Young. After an absence of over 4 years, the singer is back with songs about his life experiences between 2011 and 2014. The album shot to the top of the UK album charts the week of release, proving Will is still a force to be reckoned with.

How Many Good Tracks: 6 of the 10.

What I Liked: Coming from a reality TV background, it’s no surprise that Will’s vocals are fantastic. He explores his voice on this record and stretches it to places he may not have before. Will also plays around with elements of swing and jazz on the album which make the songs quite interesting. The album is very personal and explores a recent break up Will went through, and, as expected, some great songs came out of this scenario.

What I Didn’t Like: The album doesn’t stand out from the crowd. Sure, there are some decent tracks on the record, but nothing that makes one stand back and say ‘wow’. Will has also done a complete 360 to the sound on his previous album which, for his fans, can either be refreshing or completely disappointing.

Best Track: Like A River

Rating: 3/5
