It’s been one of the most critically acclaimed productions to have ever hit the theatre seen and was even turned into a fantastic film a few years ago and after touring the world, Warhorse has finally landed at the Montecasino complex in South Africa!
At the outbreak of World War One, Joey, young Albert’s beloved horse, is sold to the Cavalry and shipped to France. He’s soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary journey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man’s land. Albert, who remained on his parents’ Devon farm, cannot forget Joey. Though still not old enough to enlist he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and bring him home.
Not only is the story powerful, but the cast is just incredible. The woman who played Albert’s mother grabbed me from the start. What a strong, emotional actress she is and it’s great seeing a cast like that on a stage.
Obviously, the puppets make the show. Sure, it was incredibly weird at first and it does take you a good 15 minutes to get used to the idea, but once you do the results are magical! The puppets – from young Joey, to the big stallions to the other horses (and even a duck) are beautifully created. That being said, the movements the puppeteers create are so life-like that you instantly forget that people are manoeuvring this puppet.
One thing I realized is that so much can be said from a horse just by the way it moves it’s ears it brings so much emotion into the character of Joey. It’s clear that a lot of hard work and research went into these puppets and you can’t no be amazed.
This is definitely my favourite theatre production I have seen this year and with fantastic props, a great cast and a solid story, it’s quite difficult to go wrong. I urge everyone who hasn’t seen the film to head out and buy tickets today! Tickets are available at Computicket and the show runs until December when the show will be moving to Cape Town.
