Totally worth the Oscar hype.
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy
Plot: Inspired by true events, The Revenant captures one man’s epic adventure of survival and the extraordinary power of the human spirit. In an expedition of the uncharted American wilderness, legendary explorer Hugh Glass is brutally attacked by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team. In a quest to survive, Glass endures unimaginable grief as well as the betrayal of his confidant John Fitzgerald. Guided by sheer will and the love of his family, Glass must navigate a vicious winter in a relentless pursuit to live and find redemption.
Remarks: This is a brilliant film. Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance is well-deserving of an Academy Award. The film is very graphic and it totally not for sensitive viewers. Straight off the bat there is a graphic war scene followed by the infamous bear attack scene. It’s here on out that DiCaprio shines. Firstly, his performance while getting attacked was strong, but not as strong as his scenes surviving the attack against all odds. He doesn’t have many lines in the film, but gives one of the best performances of his life as he looks to get back to his hunting team and get his ultimate revenge from Tom Hardy’s character. Tom also did an incredible job. He does such a great job playing the villain and makes it so easy for the audience to hate him. There are, however, downfalls to the film. Firstly, it’s an emotional rollercoaster. That, paired with uber gruesome scenes (like Leo taking out the guys of a horse so he can keep warm inside it) leaves the viewer emotionally drained by the end of the 2 and a half hour film. Also, I found that the film didn’t give a clear background to the history of the indigenous people of America. The film had no date frame and I still have no idea what sparked the war between the white hunters and indigenous tribes of America.
Rating: 4/5
