Review: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1

There is an uprising in the districts but only Katniss Everdeen can help overthrow the Capital!

Starring: Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth

Plot: The Hunger Games saga continues in this sequel that finds Katniss Everdeen faced with a decision that could sway the fate of a nation. In the wake of the Quarter Quell, the Hunger Games have been changed forever, and Katniss ends up in District 13. Her courage having inspired a nation, the brave young heroine heeds the advice of her friends, and sets out to save Peeta. Meanwhile, Katniss’ fragile alliance with President Coin could lead to disaster.

Remarks: I’m not going to lie, I’m a huge fan of The Hunger Games and I was really impressed with this film despite it’s pathetic two-part split. The first hour was pretty boring but, naturally, necessary to build the story before the action occurs. In this sequel, Katniss has to convince the other districts that they need to fight together to overthrow the Capital and she becomes their symbol of hope – their Mockingjay. The story starts with Katniss finding out that the Capital has destroyed her home of District 12 and are murdering people in other districts in cold blood. She then begins her battle. Liam Hemsworth appears more than Josh Hutcherson in this film and I actually enjoyed that. JLaw has also improved dramatically as an actress since the first film and this was her most powerful performance yet. Also, I was distraught to see Elizabeth Bank’s character Effie Trinket without her incredible costumes. The late Philip Seymour Hoffman also played a fantastic role and it’s really sad knowing he hasn’t been able to watch this film. Sure, this instalment lacked action and a huge fight scene but I guess they need to leave something for part 2, right?

Rating: 4/5

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 releases on November 20th, 2014.
