Review: Swing City – Well Swung

Swing City
Well Swung (Electromode)

Breakdown: Graeme Watkins, Loyiso Bala and Nathan Ro are each talented musicians in their own right. They have each released solo material that has taken the country by storm, however, their love of swing has brought them together. Now, the three, under the name Swing City, perform all our favourite swing tracks and they’ve just released their debut album!

How Many Good Tracks: 7 of the 15.

What I Liked: When performing live, Swing City captivate their audience. Their love for the genre is evident and the music is beautiful. The instrumentals on this album are perfect and the band puts their own spin on the classics we know and love. There is even a cover of ‘I Wanna Be Like You’ from The Jungle Book which is awesome! Vocally, their voices compliment each other and each and every artist has the necessary vocal ability to take on the genre. The album also has some awesome guests including Lloyd Cele, Shoowop Shop and ChianoSky. Oh, and high-five for the awesome mash-ups on this record!

What I Didn’t Like: I’m not sure there was a need creating this album. Sure, the remakes of smash hits such as Loyiso’s ‘Blow Your Mind’ and Graeme Watkins Project’s ‘Music Affair’ are cool but there isn’t much of a draw-card to buy the album. If you get the chance to watch these guys live, take it! Otherwise, you can easily do without this record.

Best Track: In The Mood (Feat. Shoowop Shop)

Rating: 2.5/5
