Review: Schuks! Pay Back The Money!

Leon tries his hand at yet another hidden camera prank film

Starring: Leon Schuster and Desmond Dube

Plot: After losing rugby’s holy grail, the Currie Cup, Schuks sets off on a hilarious journey to pay for what he has done. In lieu of a R1 million fine, the Sports Minister offers Schuks a lifeline to create a documentary film that shows South Africa in a positive light. As the documentary takes shape, the Currie Cup traverses its own perilous journey as it moves from two clueless crooks, Bossie and Savage, to an enterprising traffic officer and a conniving pawnbroker, among others. True to form, the documentary features a series of brand new candid camera gags for which Schuster is so well-known, featuring unsuspecting South African citizens and a host of famous personalities and celebrities – both past and current.

Remarks: I have a love-hate with Leon Schuster films. Sure, the country loves his dry sense of humour but there is so much about his type of toilet humour that gets my blood boiling. Most of the time, it’s because of the incredibly weak script. The story of the Currie Cup getting stolen and pawned off is ridiculous. That, paired with Schuster’s new chinese TV presenter character and the other characters in the film exert a level of stupidity to the max and really put a huge damper on the film. But, like every Schuster movie, you will find yourself laughing out loud at some of his hidden camera pranks. There is one with soup blowing up in a kitchen that had me on the floor and I couldn’t help but feel bad for Afrikaans singer Robbie Wessels who Leon pranked at a court-house before sending him to jail! You know exactly what to expect in this film. If you’re a fan, make sure you see it as it may very well be Leon’s last movie of this type!

Rating: 2/5
