Breakdown: Three years ago, local rapper Ross Jack dropped his debut album ‘Notes From The Wild. It’s been three long years but now, the rapper is back with a brand new album called ‘Self Medicated’ and the great response to single ‘Gold Plated’ proves just how much South Africa has missed him.
How Many Good Tracks: 7 of the 11.
What I Liked: The thing that instantly stands out with Ross’ music is the lyrics. In hip-hop, lyrical content is incredibly important and Ross has some incredible stories to tell this time around. The stories are paired with some banging beats – the recipe for great hip-hop tracks. Ross also has a unique voice which allows him to stand out from the many other rappers around the world. The rapper dug deep and this album is him in his truest form and he has managed to create yet another great record.
What I Didn’t Like: I know this is hip-hop and that these themes are constant but I’m not such a fan of the weed and drug references throughout the album. Often times I feel the world is so broken and that kids should be hearing more positive and safe messages in their music. But hey, maybe I’m giving this too much thought…
