Review: Red Hot Chili Peppers – The Getaway

Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Getaway (Warner Music)

Breakdown: They’re back with a bang! After dropping their previous album ‘I’m With You’ back in 2011, Anthony Kiedis and the boys are back with their 11th studio album ‘The Getaway’. The album includes the smash hit ‘Dark Necessities’ and is produced by Danger Mouse, making it the first album since 1989 that wasn’t produced by Rick Rubin.

How Many Good Tracks: 8 of the 13.

What I Liked: The band sure knows how to make good music. Anthony is a great vocalist and puts this on full display this time around. There is a lovely mix of ballads and uptempo tracks to keep the attention of the listener throughout the 13-track record. Naturally, the instrumentals are crazy! The guitar is used in so many different ways. The band knows the instrument inside and out and used this to their advantage. The Getaway is polished, simple and exciting and the Chili Peppers have, yet again, created an incredible album.

What I Didn’t Like: The band gives you exactly what you would expect. I think, although a great album, the band should have shaken things up a little bit and surprised us. I also think the band needs to work on their lyrical content. This is something that brings the overall quality of the album down.

Best Track: The Longest Wave

Rating: 3.5/5
