Review: Planes 2: Fire & Rescue

Disney won’t give up on this mediocre franchise.

Starring: Dane Cook and Ed Harris

Plot: In this animated adventure sequel from Pixar Studios, world-famous air racer Dusty Crophopper finds out his racing days have come to an end when his engine is damaged. Undaunted, he learns about the world of aerial firefighters and decides to join them. Dusty teams up with veteran fire and rescue helicopter Blade Ranger and his team, a group of all-terrain vehicles collectively known as The Smokejumpers. Together, the fearless team battles a massive wildfire, and Dusty finds out what it takes to be a true hero.

Remarks: The first film in this franchise was absolutely horrible and while the sequel is a bit better than the first, one just can’t stop thinking about how much of a Cars rip-off the film really is. I liked the fact that this film strayed away from the racing aspect the first film had and the film had a bit more heart since Dusty really wants to learn how to be a firefighter and save lives. I do think the storyline lacked more substance and that it was clear that the producers added some scenes just to make the film longer. The local version of the film also has 947 morning host Darren Simpson’s voice as he plays Drip. Now a line or two would have been enough but there’s actually quite a few lines that he voices. His voice is just too much and it doesn’t fit with the film at all. Kids will most probably enjoy this one but I wouldn’t recommend it.

Rating: 2/5

Planes 2: Fire & Rescue releases on September 26th, 2014.
