Review: Pharrell – G I R L

Pharrell
G I R L (Sony Music)

Breakdown: Pharrell has always been a world-class performer, however, after appearing on Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky’ and Robin Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines’ last year, he has grabbed the whole world’s attention. Pharrell recently released the official theme song from ‘Despicable Me 2’ and months after the film’s release, the track is still going strong and has landed at number one on this week’s Billboard Hot 100. March 3rd sees the second studio album release by the producer/singer.

Tracks We Didn’t Skip: 8 of the 10.

What I Liked: Pharrell has found a sound he is comfortable with and has created the album fans around the world have been expecting. Vocally, he seems untouchable and I love how jolly the album feels. Pharrell is joined by Justin Timberlake, Miley Cyrus, Daft Punk, JoJo and Alicia Keys on the record which gives the record the kick it needs. Instrumentally, the album is absolutely incredible and it’s evident on tracks like ‘Marilyn Monore’ and ‘Gust of Wind’. The tracks seem to flow into each other quite nicely as well and while I usually hate that, it works with this record.

What I Didn’t Like: Sometimes I feel as if the album features tracks that could have easily be slotted into Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience albums and I feel that they sometimes lack originality. I also wish Pharrell experimented more on the record. Oh, and the album only has 10 tracks… WTF is up with that?

Best Track: Pharrell has done it again with Daft Punk. Their track ‘Gust of Wind’ NEEDS to be a single!

Rating: 4/5

The album releases on Monday in store and on iTunes.
