Review: Pan

The story behind the story we all know and love.

Starring: Hugh Jackman and Levi Miller

Plot: Living a bleak existence at a London orphanage, 12-year-old Peter finds himself whisked away to the fantastical world of Neverland. Adventure awaits as he meets new friend James Hook and the warrior Tiger Lily. They must band together to save Neverland from the ruthless pirate Blackbeard. Along the way, the rebellious and mischievous boy discovers his true destiny, becoming the hero forever known as Peter Pan.

Remarks: This isn’t the Peter Pan story you know. It’s the story behind the story. A time when Peter was an orphan, when Hook still had both friends and Blackbeard was the most feared man in Neverland. The film has a really great story to it. I loved the fact that Peter and Hook were friends back in the day, how Hook fell in love with Princess Tiger Lily and how the film gives Peter a lot more depth to his character. There are many great aspects to the film, however, the film falls flat on many occasions as well. Hook was portrayed bizarrely in this film, his Southern American accent threw me off completely and seeing his character with a conscience was very strange. Other characters such as Smee, Tiger Lily and even Blackbeard were pretty weak in their story. Their acting was decent but overall, these characters fell flat for me. I think this film had the potential to be great but there are too many things that weren’t done as well as they should have been.

Rating: 3/5

Pan releases October 9th, 2015.
