Review: Nightcrawler

A different look into the world of breaking news.

Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Papajohn

Plot: NIGHTCRAWLER is a thriller set in the nocturnal underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism. Finding a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem, Lou muscles into the cut-throat, dangerous realm of nightcrawling – where each police siren wail equals a possible windfall and victims are converted into dollars and cents. Aided by Rene Russo as Nina, a veteran of the blood-sport that is local TV news, Lou blurs the line between observer and participant to become the star of his own story.

Remarks: Before we start with the review, I must admit that this is not my kind of film. It borders on the idea of a docutainment because of its content and the way in which the film was shot. That being said, the film was actually really interesting. It follows a guy named Lou and how he has found a way to make money by shooting videos at crime scenes and selling the footage to local news stations. Jake did a brilliant job as Lou and I couldn’t believe at how skinny he looked in the film. That being said, there really isn’t much entertainment value in this film. Sure, it’s informative and you want to know more about the character but there was something missing for me. People have been raving around the film but it didn’t feel complete. This is something to catch on M-Net Movies but spending money on this at the cinema? Nah…

Rating: 2/5

Nightcrawler releases on March 6th, 2015.
