Review: Mumford & Sons – Wilder Mind

Mumford & Sons
Wilder Mind (Universal Music)

Breakdown: It’s their first album in almost three years, and Mumford & Sons have updated their sound, got rid of the banjo we all know and love and have released their third album Wilder Mind. The lead single, Believe, was released in March and did quite well on the charts around the world.

How Many Good Tracks: 7 of the 12.

What I Liked: You can say what you want about this band, but they’re damn good. Despite the drastic change in sound, lead single, Believe, is a brilliant track. The band have clearly worked hard on every aspect on the record, and while not every song is a good one, the instrumentals, vocals and songwriting is fantastic. Each song is so different from the previous one and it keeps you entertained throughout a full listening session – something many artists struggle to do these days. The band’s country influence is still strong on some of the tracks and that is an area they shine in.

What I Didn’t Like: While I understand that bands are always looking to explore new sounds and challenge themselves creatively, we are all a bit pissed that this isn’t the folk album we all craved for years. Sure, it’s something more commercial, but, in turn, it’s become something a lot more generic as well. Truthfully, this isn’t the album we were hoping for, but that doesn’t make it a bad one.

Best Track: Just Smoke

Rating: 2.5/5
