Review: Me Before You

The best romantic comedy I’ve watched all year.

Starring: Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin

Plot: Lou Clark knows lots of things. She knows how many footsteps there are between the bus stop and home. She knows she likes working in The Buttered Bun tea shop and she knows she might not love her boyfriend Patrick. What Lou doesn’t know is she’s about to lose her job or that knowing what’s coming is what keeps her sane. Will Traynor knows his motorcycle accident took away his desire to live. He knows everything feels very small and rather joyless now and he knows exactly how he’s going to put a stop to that. What Will doesn’t know is that Lou is about to burst into his world in a riot of color. And neither of them knows they’re going to change each other for all time.

Remarks: When I first saw the film’s trailer, I wasn’t grabbed. At all. It made the movie look like a generic romantic comedy with a generic storyline and generic outcomes. Luckily, it turned out to be anything but that. This is a story about hope, passion, life and tough decisions. It also reminds the viewer that there are certain things in life you cannot change. The movie was perfectly cast. Emilia Clarke brought a sense of compassion, love and goofiness. Sam, on the other hand, portrayed emotions of fear, anger, hopelessness, love and admiration as a man who recently found himself paralyzed. The chemistry between the two was fantastic was well and that emotion was definitely felt in the cinema. If you’re in need of a good cry, this is the film for you. The sounds of sniffles, tissues blowing and embarrassed giggles flooded the cinema as the story touched many around the room. This film is full of heart and does the book it’s based on justice. I will even go on record to say that this is the best romantic comedy I’ve watched all year.

Rating: 4.5/5
