Review: Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials

The dreaded sequal curse hits the Maze Runner franchise, but is it for the greater good?

Starring: Dylan O’Brien and Thomas Brodie-Sangster

Plot: In this next chapter of the epic “Maze Runner” saga, Thomas and his fellow Gladers face their greatest challenge yet: searching for clues about the mysterious and powerful organization known as WCKD. Their journey takes them to the Scorch, a desolate landscape filled with unimaginable obstacles. Teaming up with resistance fighters, the Gladers take on WCKD’s vastly superior forces and uncover its shocking plans for them all.

Remarks: The Maze Runner was one of my favourite films of 2014 so I had high hopes when going into this film. Not having read the book, I thought that this film would see the Gladers head out into battle which would end with an epic finale. This didn’t happen. Sure, the film has a lot of drama and action and delivers in that regard but The Scorch Trials, I’m assuming, is a filler film to prepare us for the upcoming Maze Runner: The Death Cure which releases in 2017. This time around there is a cool twist towards the end as the cast sets out to find The Right Arm – an organization that is against WCKD. Dylan O’Brien is brilliant in this film once again and really brings Thomas to life on the big screen, however, his character doesn’t evolve much in this film – nor does any other character for that matter. A lot happened in the film and it’s rather entertaining but you will find yourself leaving the cinema with a feeling that you wasted two hours of your life because not much that affects the storyline happens this time around, unfortunately.

Rating: 3/5

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials releases September 24th, 2015.
