Grey Matter (Respect Music)
Breakdown: Man, do I love this guy! He lost the title of Idols South Africa winner to Elvis Blue but he has still managed to become an incredibly successful artist. Grey Matter is the third studio album from Lloyd Cele and has already spawned the hit single ‘Tonight’, which was chosen as the official theme song for Top Billing, as well as his new single ‘Just Be Mine’, a collaboration with the incredible Cassper Nyovest.
How Many Good Tracks: 11 of the 15.
What I Liked: The one thing I really love about Lloyd is the fact that he knows he has different audiences around the country and he works hard on pleasing each and every one of his fans. Therefore, the album is filled with pop tracks, R&B and even some Jazz elements – he even has an Afrikaans song on the record! Usually, it would be rather confusing but this just works and has become something we now expect from the singer. That being said, it’s still clear that the album is pop-focused. Lloyd goes from strength to strength with each album he releases and that’s what it’s all about.
What I Didn’t Like: One thing I would try focus a bit harder on with the next album is the level of song writing on the album. Don’t get me wrong, the songs are great but they have the potential be even greater with just a bit more attention to detail.
