Review: Kelly Clarkson – Piece By Piece (Deluxe Edition)

Kelly Clarkson
Piece By Piece (Deluxe Edition) (Sony Music)

Breakdown: Kelly Clarkson is back! After a few years without any new music, the former American Idol winner has finally released her seventh studio album. Kelly started promotion for this record when she released debut single ‘Heartbeat Song’, which has become another hit for her. The album became Kelly’s third number one album, however, it only sold 93 000 copies in its first week.

How Many Good Tracks: 10 of the 16.

What I Liked: Kelly always manages to release decent records. The songwriting on each and every album she releases is fantastic and it’s clear that she’s not one of those artists who rush-release albums to make some cash. Kelly’s vocals do some weird shit to me. Goosies deluxe! Sure, the vocals aren’t as raw as in some of her previous albums, but Kelly can hit every note, sing a power ballad or a rock anthem – and smashes it. That’s something impressive and this is why she is one of the world’s biggest pop stars.

What I Didn’t Like: Kelly is happily married and has recently given birth to her baby girl River. This means that the angry, powerful music we know and love from her don’t feature prominently on the record. Now, Kelly happier and that’s clear in her music but we must admit, we do miss those powerful ballads. The album also lacks a stand-out track for me, which is the first time it’s ever happened to me when listening to a Kelly record.

Best Track: ‘Run Run Run’ featuring John Legend is beautiful.

Rating: 3/5
