Karabo
Love Is A Verb (Universal Music)
Breakdown: He took the latest season of Idols South Africa by storm and after a few short weeks, the show’s winner, Karabo Mogane, has dropped his debut album ‘Love Is A Verb’. The album comes hot off the heels of his winners single ‘Ding Dong’ which became a moderate hit for the reality star.
How Many Good Tracks: 6 of the 11.
What I Liked: Every year, there always seems to be a clear favourite on Idols South Africa and last season, it was no surprise that Karabo took the crown. The winner released a pop-influenced R&B album that speaks to his audience is a beautiful way. Karabo’s vocals are fantastic and they translate beautifully in studio. The harmonies on the album are also brilliantly done and give the tracks such depth. The album is a decent debut and I think Karabo will have a long, fruitful career ahead of him.
What I Didn’t Like: It’s important to remember that this album is essentially an extended product of Idols. The record was really rushed and, unfortunately, you can hear it in the songs. While a solid debut, I don’t get the real essence of Karabo. He has only written one song and covered two tracks on the record which I, personally, am not a fan of. I wholeheartedly believe that Karabo would have released a much better album if he was awarded time to spend on it but, unfortunately, that’s the way the cookie crumbles.
