Review: Justin Bieber – Purpose (Deluxe)

Justin Bieber
Purpose (Deluxe) (Universal Music)

Breakdown: Justin Bieber has been dealing with a lot of ups and downs over the past two years and these challenges and triumphs inspired his brand new fourth studio album ‘Purpose’. The record already has two smash hit singles to its name – the edgy ‘Sorry’ and the infectious ‘What Do You Mean?’.

How Many Good Tracks: 15 of the 18.

What I Liked: This is a personal album for Justin. From his failed relationship with Selena Gomez to the difficulties of growing up in the entertainment industry, Justin sings about it all while packaging different aspects of his life into a variety of banging pop tracks and beautiful ballads. Justin refused to hold back on this record and the world has definitely welcomed his honesty. The album is consistent from start to finish and although the deluxe edition, which has been released in South Africa, is jam-packed with 18 tracks, most of them are brilliant. Vocally, Justin is at the top of his game. He has never sounded better and his voice is the star of this album – especially since it’s not often hidden by the album’s production. There are some great collaborations on this album as well and it’s clear that each artist wasn’t put there by accident. Each extra voice adds so much to the song – exactly what collaboration is about. Justin crafted this album in a fantastic way. He sticks to his modern R&B sound, however, by teaming up with producers such as Skrillex, Justin makes sure that his music sounds fresh, modern and unique all while staying true to himself.

What I Didn’t Like: There are moments on the album where one becomes so sick of hearing Justin singing (read moaning) about the same thing. Yes, this is mostly about the Selena Gomez romance.

Best Track: Sorry

Rating: 4/5
