Review: James Blake – The Colour In Anything

James Blake
The Colour In Anything (Universal Music)

Breakdown: English singer-songwriter James Blake is back with his highly anticipated third studio album ‘The Colour In Anything’. Upon release, the album shot to the top of the UK album charts and the lead single ‘Modern Soul’ served as a great introduction to the singer’s new record.

How Many Good Tracks: 12 of the 17.

What I Liked: I’ve been waiting for James’ new album for a while and I’m glad it has taken him three years to work on this record. The album features 17 of his best tracks during the three-year recording period and sees the singer release some of his most emotional work to date. This is an artistic album which James pours his heart and soul into. Each and every song on the album is so emotional, raw and honest and the production is simple, allowing the message to shine through. Vocally, James is bound to send goosebumps down your spine with his haunting performance.

What I Didn’t Like: ‘The Colour In Anything’, however, is a depressing album. James has had his heart broken and listeners can feel his pain through the music on the album. While this shows that the artist is able to engage with his audience, the album becomes quite miserable. Also, the album includes 17 tracks which, although adds value to the customer, makes the album too drawn out and, ultimately, boring.

Best Track: I Need A Forest Fire (Feat. Bon Iver)

Rating: 3.5/5
