This is what happens when four classic childhood stories are blended into one film with a fantastic soundtrack.

Plot: A Prince Charming with a roving eye? A Witch … who raps? They’re all among the cockeyed characters in James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim’s fractured fairy tale. When a Baker and his Wife learn they’ve been cursed with childlessness by the Witch next door, they embark on a quest for the special objects required to break the spell. Swindling, lying to and stealing from Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Jack make this adventure an epic one. Everyone’s wish is granted at the end of Act One but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later. It takes a few lives before the survivors realize that they have to act altogether in order to
succeed. Thus, what begins a lively irreverent fantasy becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility
and the stories we tell our children.
Remarks: What a movie! I was hooked from the very first note that was sung. The film is, first and foremost, a musical and the first half of the film is almost entirely sung. Sure, I know what you’re thinking but it’s not as annoying as it sounds. The story is incredibly unique and the guys at Disney managed to combine the four stories we know and love so perfectly. Anna Kendrick is the star in the film for me. She takes on her role as Cinderella so perfectly and kills it! Meryl Streep also makes a fantastic witch. The film has a lot of heart and some pretty damn good songs but most of all, a kick-ass story. Although not doing the best in the international box office, the film still grossed $15.1 million Christmas day, meaning it had the fourth largest Christmas day opening gross in history behind 2009’s Sherlock Holmes, 2012’s Les Miserables, and this year’s Unbroken.
