Breakdown: We know him as the lead singer of Fokofpolisiekar and Van Coke Kartel but 2015 is the year of Francois Van Coke. His first solo album shot to the top of the local iTunes charts and the lead single, ‘Toe Vind Ek Jou’ featuring Karen Zoid is still sitting firmly in the top 10 songs in the country.
How Many Good Tracks: 10 of the 12.
What I Liked: Francois has released one of the most consistent Afrikaans albums I have heard in a long time. I was expecting this to be a hardcore rock album but Francois mixes some pop and electronic elements into this album and has managed to hit the nail on the head with regards to releasing a current and brilliant rock record. His single ‘Toe Vind Ek You, featuring Karen Zoid, which is one magical track, has been at the top of the local iTunes charts since it’s release, proving that South Africa can’t get enough of him. Francois had a hand in each and every song from the composition to the songwriting and had wonderfully composed this album. The album feels whole and rich and there’s something really amazing about that. Oh, and he has some pretty rad guests on the record such as Arno Carstens, Die Heuwels Fantasties and Karen Zoid.
What I Didn’t Like: There are times on the album where you can hear something distinctly Fokofpolisiekar or Van Coke Kartel and you will find yourself asking why he wouldn’t release that particular song with those bands rather.
